Darnley Gown

The Darnley Portrait of Queen Elizabeth I is one of my favorite portraits of QEI ever. So when I found these amazing black and gold brocade curtains at Walmart way back in 2008 or so, I knew exactly what to do with them. This fabric is basically nothing like the fabric in the portrait, but I thought the fabric would be striking cut in this style. I recently made some minor changes to improve the construction of the gown – a new collar with better shaping, added shoulder rolls inside the sleeve heads to give them more structure, and shortened the sleeves so they didn’t bunch quite as much. You can see those improves in the outdoor pictures above. It’s on my list to eventually make some tweaks to the skirt as well. This is one of my very favorite gowns to wear. It makes me feel very regal and powerful.
